Hluboka Castle
Visible from far off, on a stone outcropping where the Vltava River leaves the Ceské Budejovice basin, stands the Chateau of Hluboká. The original Gothic castle was built in the late 13th century at the command of King Václav I.
The chateau's interior decoration, mixing elements of Gothic, Renaissance, and other styles, is a work of precision. The workmanship of Italian stucco artists Silvestri and Pelegrini, and several South Bohemian woodcarvers and stonecutters, shines forth in the formal halls and banquet areas. One of the chateau's most valuable treasures is the collection tapestries, most of them imported from Brussels. There are old period copies of Madonnas from Gossaert, a.k.a. Mabus, L. Cranach jr., and Rafael a series of pictures by J.J. Hamilton, and much more.
